FOR OVER 40 YEARS character voices have been a specialty for me.

Nothing establishes creativity and a memorable message as fast as a great character voice for a funny commercial, cartoon, animation project or branded digital content.

Character voices also can be very effective in explainer videos.

VERSATILITY has always been my voiceover calling card, because of my professional training and because of my vocal range.

Sometimes the character is already fully developed. Other times, you've got a script, a creative brief and an idea of what the character needs to accomplish. Either way, I enjoy working with producers and creative teams to find the voice, personality, accent, attitude and delivery that bring the character to life.

That can include everything from British, Irish, New York/Bronx and Southern accents to Texas cowboy voices and plenty of characters that don't fit neatly into any category.

Combined with my team attitude and ability to take direction, that versatility has led to some really fun character work over the years, including a race track announcer for Crest, an old-time network announcer character for PBS and Lucky the Leprechaun for a Lucky Charms cereal commercial.

One example of my video game voice acting work is a 1940s Boston-accented news announcer for BioShock.

Q: What does a character voice actor do?

A: My job as a character voice actor is more than just coming up with a funny or unusual voice. It's about creating a believable personality that fits the script, tells the story and connects with the audience. Whether the character is appearing in a commercial, animation, cartoon, digital project or video game, my job is to make the voice serve the character and the project — not just call attention to itself.

Q: Can you create a character voice from a script or creative brief?

A: Absolutely. Sometimes you know exactly what you want the character to sound like, and sometimes we're starting with a script, a description and a few ideas. I enjoy working with producers and creative teams to develop the personality, voice, accent, attitude and delivery until we find the character that's right for the project.

Q: What kinds of character voices can you perform?

A: My character work can range from natural and believable to quirky, comedic, exaggerated or completely over-the-top. I also perform a variety of accents and regional character voices, including British, Irish, New York/Bronx, Southern and Texas cowboy. And sometimes the most fun characters are the ones that don't fit neatly into any category.
